Assistant Chief John Catone began his law enforcement career with the Saratoga Springs Police Department on June 6, 1987.
Assistant Chief Catone began his career on the 12am - 8am shift and primarily worked that shift until being promoted to the rank of Investigator in October, 1999. During his time in the Investigation Division, Assistant Chief Catone worked numerous major cases, cold cases, and achieved NYS certifications in Arson Investigation, Crime Scene Evidence Technician, Hostage Negotiation and as a General Topics Instructor.
In 2006, he was promoted to the rank of Administrative Sergeant where he primarily worked on Emergency Management Plans, School Evacuation Plans, and Special Events. In 2008, he returned to the Investigation Division as the Investigations Sergeant responsible for overseeing Juvenile, Criminal, Narcotics and Internet Crimes Against Children Investigations.
In 2011, Assistant Chief Catone was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to head the Investigation Division, a position he held until October, 2013, when he was promoted to Assistant Chief. He served as the department’s Acting Chief of Police from May through September 2019.
Assistant Chief Catone is a life-long resident of Saratoga Springs. He attended St. Clements Elementary School, a graduate of Saratoga Central Catholic High School, holds a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Empire State College and a Master's degree in Criminology from Arizona State University.
Assistant Chief Catone and his wife Erin have a daughter Riley.
